Alamo Bowl
Of course, the main reason we were in San Antonio was to see the Bucks play. But we
enjoyed the RiverWalk. Our hotel, La Mansion, was right on it, so it was easy to pop out and see
the shops and restaurants. The first two days were dominated with Buckeye fans. Then the Cowboys
began to show up in large numbers. "Go Bucks!" cheers were met with "Orange Cowboys!". Oklahoma State
fans were very confident that they would win. After all, they had the #8 running back in the nation,
as they were prone to tell us. We just smiled because we knew we had a pretty good run-defence.
The pep rally on the RiverWalk was cool with both bands arriving on river barges; they were
followed by the teams on barges. The number of fans at the game was divided about evenly. Two "Orange Cowboys"
sat in front of us. As their kicker missed pre-game kicks, they responded, "He's a lot better than
that." Nugent came out and started kicking them through from 55 yards. The two "Orange Cowboys" began to lower
their heads. The game started and it was apparent that the Bucks had come to play. When Zwick went
out and Ginn was put in at QB, one "Orange Cowboy" said to the other, "We know he's going to run, so
all we have to do is go get him." Doug leaned forward and said, "Therein lies the problem--getting him."
By the middle of the 3rd quarter, our "Orange Cowboys' had left--as had many of the other Oklahoma State
fans. The OSUMB clearly dominated. Along the RiverWalk, their fans were very gracious after the game, but
what could they say: they just had their butts
totally kicked.
As a nice followup, we got 6 life-birds on the trip.
