Possible Northern Shrike
at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge
2.9.05
The pictures were taken at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. We were on the boardwalk off of
Freeland Rd. The weather was mild and sunny with temperatures in the upper 30's.
The bird was first seen near the top of an evergreen on the other side of the beaver pond, straight
back from the end of the boardwalk. Our best view was at this location. A Belted Kingfisher flew into the top of the tree and the Shrike
moved to our left (direction of Rt. 32) and landed in the top of a bushy tree. The pictures were taken of
the bird at that
location.
Through our bins, the bird had a definite hook to its bill and there was white in the area of the lores.
