The weather forecasts were for a lot of snow in the Canaan Valley area.
We arrived early on Friday and were able to do some crosscountry skiing.
Early Friday evening it began to snow and all through the night it came down hard. In the morning, the snow plow came and we thought all would be fine.
However, it never stopped snowing and actually snowed harder on Saturday.
In the beginning, we joked about how deep it was getting and were enjoying getting out in it. Some people were still able to move about in their vehicles, but we soon stopped seeing the snow plows.
It snowed even harder Saturday night. Reports on TV were that all of Tucker County was closed.
We had met a permanent resident down the road. He said that we should dig around the car so that when the plow did come, the plow people would know we wanted to leave.
Dig we did.
Sunday came and the snow did not stop. Sunday night, the power went out. Until it came back on, we were lucky to have a wood burning stove.
We were scheduled to leave Monday.
The reality company called and said that there was no way we would be able to leave. They offered to bring us extra food by way of snowmobile. We still had enough, but said we would let them know.
It got to a point where the snow was so deep, that we could only get around with our snowshoes.
Between the constant snowing and the wind, every time we tried to dig around the car, we had to start anew.
Monday came and it was still snowing.
Finally, late in the afternoon, I saw a huge frontloader working its way up the road. The snow was over. Reports were that we had gotten 32-42 inches. Many places were hip deep around us and the drifts were unbelievable. Down the road, a house had completely disappeared into a drift.
We ate supper with the Elliott and Margot Ours (we had run out of food).
In the morning (only a day late), we were able to make our way down the mountain. It was a little frightening because they had only cleared enough for one car to pass through. Many of the main roads in the West Virginia and Maryland were just one lane.
